Ideal for: Adding to composts. Ponds and aquatic planting. Drainage in pots and tubs. Alpines and rock gardens. Suppressing weeds and deterring slugs. Improving drainage of heavy soils. It's essential that pots and tubs are kept moist but not waterlogged and introducing quartzite grit will prevent soil from sticking and allow excess water to freely drain away. Plants such as alpines that are found in rock gardens will also benefit if the soil contains plenty of grit as this replicates their natural growing conditions. If you have a pond or aquarium, potting grit can be used to cover the compost in aquatic plant baskets so the soil remains intact. As well as adding to composts for root cuttings and propagating cuttings, covering sewn seeds with a fine sprinkling of grit will prevent them from drying out as they germinate.
