Occasionally volcanoes erupt and bury nearby forests with burning volcanic ash. The silica in the ash gradually replaces the wood, molecule by molecule, with minerals such as quartz, agate or marble. This preserves the shape of the tree and its rings, petrified trees can be found in streams, but the most beautiful pieces are found buried several metres deep.
